Trump says U.S. has discussed buying more Bitcoin as crypto rallies
President Donald Trump gave cryptocurrency markets another political boost on August 19, 2026, saying the U.S. has discussed accumulating more Bitcoin while urging Congress to move forward with major crypto legislation.
The comments came during a White House meeting with cryptocurrency executives and financial regulators. Bitcoin rallied sharply around the event, although Trump’s remarks were only one part of a broader move also driven by falling Treasury yields, government bond buybacks and a major short squeeze.
Trump confirms more U.S. Bitcoin accumulation has been discussed
One of the most notable moments came when Trump was asked whether the U.S. government was considering accumulating “sizable” amounts of Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies.
Trump did not announce a purchase. But he confirmed that the idea has been discussed and again argued that Bitcoin can benefit the U.S. dollar.
“Certainly it’s been talked about. It’s taken a lot of pressure off the dollar. It’s been very, very good for the dollar.”
— Donald Trump, August 19, 2026
Trump added that he would listen to recommendations from his advisers about further accumulation. No purchase amount, timetable or funding mechanism was announced.
That distinction matters. The United States already has a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, created by executive order on March 6, 2025. The reserve is primarily funded with Bitcoin forfeited to the federal government. The order also allows the Treasury and Commerce departments to develop budget-neutral strategies for acquiring additional Bitcoin, provided taxpayers face no additional cost.

Trump pushes Congress to pass the CLARITY Act
Bitcoin accumulation was not Trump’s only message.
He also urged Congress to move forward with the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, better known as the CLARITY Act.
“Now we need Congress to take the next step by passing the Clarity Act — a fair version of the Clarity Act.”
— Donald Trump, August 19, 2026
The legislation is intended to establish a clearer regulatory structure for digital assets and determine how different crypto assets fall under U.S. financial regulators.
The bill has struggled to progress through the Senate, but a procedural vote is currently scheduled for September 15, 2026. Trump argues that clearer rules are necessary for the U.S. to maintain its lead over China in digital assets and financial technology.
The legislation remains politically contentious. Among the issues are ethics provisions relating to government officials and crypto holdings. Trump’s own financial interests have added to that debate, with his 2025 financial disclosure reporting substantial income from crypto-related ventures.
Trump gives Hyperliquid an unexpected boost
Trump also surprised markets by specifically mentioning Hyperliquid, the decentralized derivatives platform that has largely remained unavailable to U.S. users.
Speaking about CFTC Chairman Michael Selig, Trump said he was:
“Working to bring Hyperliquid into the United States in a fully compliant and legal fashion.”
— Donald Trump, August 19, 2026
Hyperliquid’s HYPE token jumped sharply following the remarks, trading around $69.60 and approximately 19% higher over 24 hours at the time of reporting.
The comment is significant because it suggests the administration wants to bring parts of decentralized crypto trading into the regulated U.S. financial system rather than simply restricting them.
Bitcoin rallies above $70,000
Crypto markets reacted strongly on August 19 and continued higher on August 20.
Bitcoin moved above $68,000 on Wednesday and subsequently broke through $70,000. By 14:09 UTC on August 20, 2026, Bitcoin was trading around $71,693, up 4.8% on the day and 13.8% over four sessions.
Trump’s comments strengthened an increasingly crypto-friendly regulatory narrative in Washington, but they were not the only reason Bitcoin moved.
The U.S. Treasury also expanded its long-term bond buyback program, helping push yields lower and improving liquidity expectations. At the same time, a heavily short crypto market experienced large forced liquidations as prices moved higher.
That is important after the difficult first half of 2026. Our earlier analysis of why crypto is crashing in 2026 showed how interest rates, ETF outflows and tighter liquidity had weighed heavily on Bitcoin.
Those same forces can work in reverse when liquidity conditions improve.
What Trump's comments mean for crypto investors
The biggest takeaway from August 19 is not that the U.S. government is about to make a massive Bitcoin purchase.
Trump did not announce that.
Instead, his comments provide three potentially important signals: additional Bitcoin accumulation remains under discussion, the administration wants Congress to create clearer crypto legislation and regulators appear increasingly willing to find compliant routes for crypto businesses to operate in the United States.
For investors, that reduces some of the regulatory uncertainty that has surrounded the sector.
It does not remove Bitcoin’s other risks. Interest rates, ETF flows, leverage and broader market liquidity remain important drivers of cryptocurrency prices.
